First Baptist Searcy
by Amber Watson
Throughout the week of GH music camp (January 2012), my thoughts were continually bent
towards our upcoming Searcy, Arkansas D’Now. As a newly fledged Glowing Heart member, I had
excitement but also doubts concerning the approaching weekend when I would help lead a group of
students in both Bible study sessions and worship services for the first time. We arrived at FBC Searcy
Friday afternoon, and after setting up, went out to meet the youth. The evening progressed and God
removed any worries I had as I interacted with my students: 9th and 10th grade girls.
Back at the host home, our sessions focused a lot on the importance of really letting one’s light
shine out in a dark world. As Christians it’s our responsibility to represent Christ in absolutely everything
that we do and not to bow down to the temptation to blend in; it’s hard to represent Christ when we
look exactly like the rest of the world. Our material spoke of how Jesus was authentic, and how we
should be the same. For someone to be authentic, they must be real. They must be open with others
and willing to admit imperfections. They must show and act out what they profess to believe. Only then
can they truly lead others towards Christ.
My girls’ desires to begin afresh with God and to be more vocal about their beliefs were a
refreshing reminder to use every opportunity to consistently live out my faith whether it’s walking
through Wal-mart or overseas on a mission’s trip. Despite the fact that I was their leader, God spoke to
me through my students during our sessions and one-on-ones and I’m so grateful that He gave me the
opportunity to serve them this weekend. My expectations for the D’now and how God would work were
by far exceeded and all the glory goes to Him!!
This is love: Jesus came and died and he gave his life for us!
